Our Best Prop Bets for the 2020 Travelers Championship

The PGA Tour season moves on to the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands. Once again we will see an abnormally stacked field due to the shortened tournament schedule. Although, it will now be a bit less stacked with players including Brooks Koepka, Graeme McDowell and Cameron Champ withdrawing due to positive covid-19 tests for either themselves or their caddies. It will be interesting to see how the sportsbooks will respond in terms of refunding bets if players withdraw due to coronavirus after teeing off. Not every online sportsbook has a special ‘Karma Committee’ to handle such unfairness and bad beats like they do at PointsBet. But, enough virus talk already, we’re trying to play golf here!

Here are a few PGA Props that I’ll be wagering on this week at the Travelers.

PGA Prop Picks for the Travelers Championship

Top GB and Ireland Player

This is one my favorite value bets on the board that still pays almost 3.5 to 1 at FanDuel Sportsbook. In fact, I’m surprised to see the number as high as it is. I’m taking Justin Rose to be the top finisher from Great Britain or Ireland. Perhaps the value is inflated here on Rose by the presence of two chronic disappointments named McIlroy and Casey. Casey (+450) has great history at TPC RH but this is his first event on the tour this season and he seems to always underperform when he’s a frontrunner. If you watch Rory play, then you don’t need me to explain whey +200 is a bad number.

Why Justin Rose? He is coming off finishes of 3 and 14 at the two events since the restart. He gained a ton of shots tee to green at both and had solid approach numbers even at Harbour Town where he was making his career debut. Rose hasn’t played Travelers in recent years but it used to be a regular stop on his schedule and he gained almost 3 shots putting on the way to a 13th place finish in 2013. Before that Rose set the 36 hole scoring record at this course in 2010, before a bad 4th round cost him the event. If all he has to do is beat Rory, Casey and the likes of Matthew Fitzpatrick, Ian Poulter, Shane Lowry Matt Wallace and Russel Knox.. then sign me up for Justin Rose +340.

Best Bulldog

College props are a new addition to the PGA lineup at multiple sportsbooks. FanDuel, UniBet, DraftKings and Pointsbet all include these bets on who will be the top finisher from a group of fellow alumni from various universities. The Georgia Bulldog group presents a good opportunity at the Travelers this week. Why? Because Brian Harman is in it! I bet you thought I was going to say Bubba Watson? Everyone is hyping Bubba this week and rightfully so with 4 top tens at this event that include 2 wins. So it makes sense to have some action on Watson this week but in this group I like Harman more.

Brian Harman has finishes of 23 and 28 this year, and Travelers is perhaps his best regular event with 3 top tens including 8th in 2019. He’s putting well and I think he’ll have no problem finishing in the top 30 here. Seeing Harman at +400 ahead of Kevin Kisner at +450 is an indicator that Vegas agrees he’s a good pick here.

So let’s take the +400 at PointsBet for Brian Harman to be the top Georgia Bulldog and hope Bubba doesn’t break the top 50 at the Travelers again this year. The other 5 golfers in this group? I’d bet them all to miss the cut.

Double Dose of Niemann

The young sharp shooter from Chile is heating up. We’ve been following his trajectory for two years now and it feels like Joaquin Niemann has officially arrived. He was incredible at RBC as a top performer in greens in regulation, good drives and birdies on the way to a 5th place finish at a course he hadn’t played professionally. I think he’ll carry the momentum into the Travelers, where he finished 5th last year. The deeper field didn’t keep him out of the top ten last week and this week he is coming in with course history on his side.

So, let’s make two prop bets on Niemann. First a top ten feels like a no-brainer at UniBet for +300 (or take a top 20 for +163). Secondly i’Il have Niemann action in the nationality market. For +110 to be the top South American finisher at Travelers, all he has to do is beat some not-so-hot competition. This includes Jhonattan Vegas, Sebastion Munoz and Emiliano Grillo.

A Clear Ancer on this 3 Ball

This is a layup in my opinion. The bet is Abraham Ancer to finish ahead of both Ryan Palmer and Brandt Snedeker. Let’s start with why not to bet Palmer. He has awful history at the course and last week he played well but crumbled in the fourth round. Snedeker has good finishes at TPC River Highlands, but not in recent years. Last week he missed the cut at RBC Heritage losing almost 3.5 shots on approach to the field and also losing with his putter. Sure he might have needed a week to get back in the swing of things, but if he misses so many fairways and greens again this week, he will once again slam the trunk and go home early.

Ancer on the other hand is perhaps the hottest player in the world right now. He gained 11.8 shots approach at RBC and was on autopilot from the tee with a low ball flight that keeps him in play. He’s not a bomber, but he doesn’t have to be. He gained shots in every single category at the 2018 Travelers on the way to an 8th place finish. Plus money? Yes please. I’m going with +125 at FanDuel on Ancer to win the 3 ball match vs Ryan Palmer and Brand Snedeker.
